stroud was founded in 1892, just inside oklahoma territory. for several years it prospered as a cattle shipping point and also as a hub of the illicit whiskey trade with indian territory, which was dry. in 1923 the opening of the stroud oil field brought growth, and the town also benefited from its location on route 66. south of town is the site of the old sac (also sauk) and fox indian agency, established in 1869 when the tribe moved from kansas. a boarding school opened here in 1872. the agency and school were moved to shawnee in 1917, but the site has been reoccupied as the tribal complex.
