chandler was founded in 1891, a week after the sac (or sauk) and fox tribal lands were opened to white settlement. a separate land run was necessary here because government surveyors were running behind schedule. bill tilghman, the famous frontier lawman who had been marshal of dodge city in its wildest era, had a homestead here and is also buried here in the town cemetery. he was killed in oklahoma’s last old west-style gun battle southeast of here at cromwell. chandler is billed as the “pecan capital of the world”.
